The Freedom of Flight Film Festival is a not-for-profit NZ based film festival
showcasing international and NZ adventure flying films that was established in
2017. Their aim is to promote adventure flying in its various forms and its culture to the

NEW DECLARED OUT-AND-RETURN WORLD DISTANCE RECORD

Slovenian pilots Jost Napret, Primoz Susa, Bojan Gaberšek and Dušan Orož have completed a 300 km Out-and-Return World Record flight from Sorica, Slovenia. All flying Enzo 3s.

In Jost’s words:

“This one was a few years in the making, the weather is changing a lot over such distance in the Alps. Therefore we tried earlier in the year than before, what proved to be the right decision. First thermals started working already at 8.30 and we took off at 9.00 a.m! Following to our almost traditional 300 km declared task, we were flying from Sorica, over Soca Valley, crossing Gemona, further direction to Longarone to a waypoint south from Agordo and back to home.

The impressive scenery over the snowy Alps and the Italian Dolomites rounded up the perfect day!”

PWC BAIXO GUANDU, BRAZIL

The Second stop of the 2018 PWC in Baixo Guandu, Brazil, came to an end on Saturday after five valid tasks.

Congrats to the OZONE Team, which took first place in the team category.

OZONE Team Pilot, Cody Mittanck, who finished in 10th place overall, shares his insight from the last day of competition in Baixo Guandu:

“I’m always wondering what skills competition pilots have compared to other disciplines of our sport. I think one of the primary skills that develops instinctively after years of experience is akin to proprioception in hyperdrive. Proprioception is an awareness of our bodies moving through space. In competition a pilot is constantly judging his position relative to often 30 other pilots nearby within a thermal rocketing upwards into a cloud. Add to this the fact that these other pilots can be moving at variable speeds forwards, up, or down (and sometimes straight at you turning the opposite direction as two gaggles merge). Even considering this highly tuned sense I still find it amazing we don’t collide on a regular basis. RUSH 5 SWEEPS PODIUM IN ZILLERTAL

This weekend at the Zillertal Battle in Mayrhofen, Austria, where EN B wings were de rigeur, Simon Arnold took first overall flying the new Rush 5. He was joined on the podium by Heli Eichholzer and Joachim Oberhauser, who were also flying the Rush 5. Christoph Eder was just behind in 4th overall, flying the Swift 4, and Thomas Weingartner took 7th on the Rush 5, putting five OZONE pilots in the top ten. Full results here.

This was a hotly contested event with big names flying intermediate class wings. Intensely competitive tasks and racing harnesses were the norm. Rush 5 pilots reported that they had a clear advantage in accelerated flight, and commented that the R5 converted energy in a way that is reminiscent of comp wings, climbing when bar was released.

Congrats to the pilots in this event, and to the organizers – it’s great to see intermediate class wings being the focus of a major event!
