Another week, another record for Yassen

After beating the Bulgarian free distance record, Yassen was still hungry for more. Last week, he went for a new triangle in his homeland. In his own words:

“Since in the beginning of September we’re having the Bulgarian Nationals in Sopot, followed by a World Cup there next year, it was time for me to do a little terrain study. I want to be setting good, ambitious tasks at the comps at home and if possible winning them too. Both reasons to go practice, trying a triangle I had been thinking of for a while.
First 70km on the mountain face going east, technical but fast in the blue and into the headwind, then a 60% turn to the right and transition over the smaller ridge in front and into the flats beyond, again technical but even faster; then another 60% turn to the right and coming back to Sopot through similar terrain but greener, slower, much slower, about 60km of survival mode, low and slow, but not quite impossible, and finally back on the main ridge for some golden hour surfing of those woody ridges to extend that last leg another 10k west, and then back to base. …read more

The third stop of the 2017 PWC in Disentis, Switzerland came to an end on Saturday. The comp started on Monday with an exciting and technical first 106 km task. After the first task, wet weather overtook the Swiss Alps and it wasn’t until Saturday that the sky finally reopened for the second and final task, a 43 km race to goal.

The overall win went to Alfredo Studer and in the women’s category, unsurprisingly, Seiko Fukuoka took the win again, finishing in 10th place overall. Both flew their Enzo 3s. The OZONE Team was first overall in the Team Rankings.

Yassen Savov Sets New Record at Home

Of all the ingredients needed to create a record flight, imagination is Yassen’s favorite. On August 8th, Mr. Savov imagined himself launching in Northeast Bulgaria, and landing on a Greek beach. The result, a new Bulgarian Distance Record, and an amazing flight. Thus, another adventure story from our friend, Yassen Savov:

“Cross country flying is kind of like mountain climbing, but inverted – from vertical to horizontal – in its core the same adventure across space, that challenge of the place beyond drawing you further, higher, deeper, to the outer limits of what you know and what you can, that place beyond challenging you to focus all your powers and perform, to conquer space and come back down a better man, improved, inspired, having completed something beautiful, yet completely useless.

In its fluidity, however, it’s more like skiing – the lines you draw flowing smoothly across the canvas of your landscape, restricted only by the laws of physics and your own imagination.

Speaking of imagination, I had seen the forecast and realized that one of my dream lines could be painted on that next day, so I bought a ticket for the night train from Sofia and spent all night on it to …read more
