RICHARD CARTER BREAKS THE 300 KM BARRIER IN THE UK

The reports from the UK keep coming, in one of the best flying seasons seen there in years.

On July 15th, our friend Richard Carter, who over the years has held the UK XC record, got it again. Richard is the first person in the UK to break the 300km barrier, flying a declared 301km flight.

In Richard’s words:

“I had been looking for sites that a 300km flight could be made from for a year at least. The forecasts suggested there was a chance of a good flight from Elan on the Sunday. I flew near there on the Saturday as well but bombed out twice.

This probably helped as I spent the rest of the afternoon resting and sorting out Sundays flight. The 300 was what I wanted, and if everything went spot on there was a chance.

But it was not an obvious record day. No increase in wind after take off and the thermal strength was quite weak on route . I was there in mid Wales, so would give it a go but I felt it was at best a 50/50 chance. On take off there was only me and ,Piers Nesbitt, the local club chairman. We …read more

Jim Mallinson’s Dream Flight

The British flying season has been delivering fantastic conditions since day one, and several records have fallen, along with many personal bests.

On June 22nd, our good friend and OZONE team pilot, Jim Mallinson, completed a flight he’s been dreaming of for years: across the Solent in southern England to the Isle of Wight, where he grew up and learned to fly (before OZONE even existed). A few pilots flew to the island in the 90s, but at its west end, where the crossing is just over 1 km. Jim was over the sea for 7km. He left the mainland at 3500′ with a nice tailwind, but quickly dropped into an increasing sea breeze and arrived with just 600′ to spare, and celebrate with, above home.

Jim was flying his Zeno.

Congrats Jim for making it dry to the other side!
Cheers from all the OZONE team.

2018 US Open at Chelan

The second leg of the US paragliding nationals finished on Saturday, after four valid tasks.

Chelan was, as usual, an incredible playground for creative lines and endless transitions. This year, the pilots had the opportunity to avoid the flats and explore possibilities in the mountains during the first two tasks, with the first task going toward the beautiful town of Mazama in the Cascade Mountains, and the second task taking the pack almost to Canada with a 130 km race to goal, in Oroville.

Day three was cancelled due to strong conditions at launch but that didn’t stop a few pilots from going far. Donizette Lemos, Mitch Riley, and Matt Henzi, flew to the Idaho boarder for a 250+ km flight on their rest day.

The last two tasks were tricky but exciting: the third task saw only eight pilots in goal who survived a 50 km glide over green irrigated fields. The fourth and last day was the most challenging, with stable conditions and winds that made the first part of the race difficult, forcing half of the pilots (including the leaders!), to land before the first waypoint.

In the end it was brazilian legend and distance record holder, Donizete Lemos, …read more
